“China Under Construction: Contemporary Art from the People’s Republic

Artists comment on the physical and artistic rebuilding of China

The more than 20 artists in “China Under Construction: Contemporary Art from the People’s Republic” leave the candy-coated, pop imagery of Chinese art behind to embrace a more realistic, dramatic view of industrialized China today. The show features video, photography, sculpture, installation and performance. For the video Lady’s, Cui Xiuwen hid a camera by the mirrors of a women’s restroom at a popular Chinese nightclub. The viewer sees women coming out of stalls pulling up their underwear and pants, boosting their cleavage and checking their makeup as if they were the only ones around. Zhan Wang’s Urban Landscape, Beijing is a photo of the reconstructed city using pots, pans, foil and smoke.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Starts: July 14. Continues through Aug. 31
