Cat, Mouse, Bird and Boy and Veteran Silas

Bold first steps from a brand-new theater company

Leave it to a couple of playwrights to create a company called Wordsmyth Theater. As the newest member of Houston’s live theater scene (the company was just formed in June), the infant troupe is already up and walking! Their first production features two powerful-sounding one-acts. Cat, Mouse, Bird and Boy and Veteran Silas. Cat, Mouse, Bird and Boy, by Elizabeth Anne Earle, is a fantastically dark play about a cat owned by a Nazi during WW II. The lessons kitty learns about the atrocities of war are disturbingly profound, especially in our current climate. Equally as unsettling is Asher Wyndham’s Veteran Silas, about a young soldier who returns from the Iraq war riddled with guilt. Here’s to hoping this brutally ambitious playbill is just the beginning of great things to come.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Aug. 17. Continues through Sept. 2
