“Baroque & Roll”

Mercury Baroque ensemble rocks Bach

In today’s concert “Baroque & Roll,” there are no electric guitars — only violins and cellos. And in the expert hands of the Mercury Baroque ensemble, you can be sure these centuries-old instruments will be used to their best. Just in case you’re not a baroque-era music expert (shame on you!), the 17th- and 18th-century style is well known for its vigor and ornamentation. (Translation: It rocked!) Mercury Baroque is also known for its vigor (although for some odd reason, they’ve ditched the ornamentation — no powdered wigs, for example). The ensemble does a great job of bringing baroque music to today’s MTV-raised, A.D.D. audiences in a relevant, “Isn’t this cool?” way. Today’s concert features a lineup of the mega-hits by the era’s superstars. Led by conductor Antoine Plante, the ensemble will play Bach’s Violin Double Concerto, Vivaldi’s Summer and Pachelbel’s famed Canon (if you’ve been to a wedding, you’ve heard it).
Sat., Sept. 1, 8 p.m.
