More About

Those names may not be familiar to anyone younger than 40, but any classic soul lover will testify they're among the genre's greatest singers ever. With "Treat Her Right," Humble resident Roy Head showed being white was no hindrance to making some of the baddest blue-eyed soul one man could offer, and that 1965 song on the Backbeat label was one of the biggest hits ever to come out of this humid city. The only better-known H-town soul song may be Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up"; if somehow you haven't heard this anthem by this point in your life, how's sharing that cave with Osama bin Laden going? Beaumont's Barbara Lynn may not sound familiar to you either, but the Rolling Stones liked her "Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Going On)" so much, they recorded it in 1965; it's on The Rolling Stones, Now! alongside "Heart of Stone." Philadelphia's Barbara Mason ("Yes, I'm Ready," "Sad Sad Girl") rounds out the lineup, truly making this a show of legendary proportions.
