9-11/9-11 is a tale of two cities, of two tragedies. The animated short film jumps back and forth between the September 11 attack on New York City’s Twin Towers in 2001 and the U.S.-supported military coup against Chilean President Salvador Allende in 1973. Artist and creator Mel Chin weaves together the life of two men — a Chilean who moves to the U.S. in 2001 and an American involved in the overthrow of Allende in 1973. The stories depict the destruction of entire cities and the relationships and lives torn apart in the aftermath. Chin, who originally developed the story as a graphic novel, brought the tale to life last year with the help of Chilean animators. The film has since been shown worldwide in an effort to start a global dialogue about overt and covert manipulations of power. A live video conference from New York and Santiago, Chile, with testimony from people affected by the two events, follows today’s showing.
