Guitar Shorty is blues music royalty – or at least he should be. Shorty, who was born right here in Houston, was just 16 when he went on the road with Ray Charles. By age 19, Shorty was a seasoned bandleader and sideman, and on the road with Sam Cooke. After that, he worked with BB King, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and T-Bone Walker, earning fans like the Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix. But somehow Shorty never reached the recording or concert success of his buddy BB, even though many would say he was just as talented. But that was then. These days, Shorty isn’t looking back. With a great new CD, We the People, the guitarist seems to have found a comfortable home with Alligator Records. He’s busy touring, pushing the new record, and oh yeah, celebrating his birthday just like any other real-deal bluesman would - on stage. So, cut the cake with one of Jimi’s favorite guitar players today.
