The Merry Widow dances her way to romance
Should we marry for love or money? In the romantic comedy The Merry Widow, the answer depends on who you ask. It’s Paris, 1905, and poor Hanna (Barbara Bears) has been left 50,000 francs by her late husband. Baron Zeta, from the impoverished nation of Pontevedro, launches a scheme to get her to marry his countryman, Count Danilo (Simon Ball), thereby keeping Hanna’s riches at hand and saving the country from bankruptcy. Thankfully, Hanna actually is in love with Danilo, but he, of course, refuses to play the gigolo, much to the Baron’s dismay. While Hanna and Danilo dance around their feelings, the Baron’s schemes to force them together get more and more elaborate. There are saucy can-can girls, plenty of champagne, romance, comedy and, ah, merriment. The first ballet of the Houston Ballet’s new season, The Merry Widow is an audience favorite. Bright and cheery, the ballet is a happy opening to what promises to be an exciting season.
