City of Angels

Cy Coleman creates a new kind of witchcraft

Cy Coleman is a Broadway legend. One of musical theater’s most prolific songwriters, he wrote the tunes for Sweet Charity, I Love My Wife, Little Me and Seesaw, among others. But in 1990 he outdid himself with City of Angels, an intriguingly complicated comedy about a young L.A. writer named Stine who creates Stone, a character for a detective tale. The story of the two men plays out onstage with each character’s life set to its own color scheme and stylized music. Anyone who’s listened to “Witchcraft” or “The Best Is Yet to Come” knows just how memorable Coleman’s tunes are, and the folks at Masquerade Theatre have brought together some of Houston’s best singers, including Ilich Guardiola as Stine and Luther Chakurian as Stone, for the production.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 28. Continues through Oct. 7, 2007
