“War”

The ArtCar Museum offers an eclectic mix of war-related art

From the heroic imagery of propaganda posters and memorial statues to the raw brutalism of Picasso’s Guernica and Goya’s Disasters of War, art and war have always had a symbiotic, if tortured, relationship. It’s too soon to tell how the art world will commemorate our current situation in Iraq, but the ArtCar Museum is forging a path to understanding with “War.” For the exhibit, the museum asked local, regional and national artists to create any sort of work (sculpture, painting, photographs — anything smaller than nine square feet) related to the concept of war (on terror, on drugs, on racism and so forth). The result was an astonishing 105 works. There’s no particular focal point, just an eclectic, engaging assortment that responds to conflicts past, present and future.
