Chocolate Festival of Texas

Sweetness comes to town

Selina Shadd had a simple reason to start the Chocolate Festival of Texas: “Everybody loves chocolate!” And she’s right, we do. Sumptuous, decadent, sinful, indulgent chocolate — yum, yum, it’s good. Today, the Humble Civic Center hosts the inaugural fest with a two-part event. “There will be a tasting early in the afternoon where people can sample chocolate creations by chocolatiers, chefs and caterers,” says Shadd. In the evening, there will be a demonstration by the traveling Taste of Home Cooking School. “This is the first time Taste of Home is coming to Houston,” says Shadd, “so we’re excited.” Taste of Home will prepare more than a dozen chocolate dishes, from appetizers to desserts. The festival, which is drawing chocolatiers from across the state to compete for prizes in seven categories, will also feature a wine tasting, specialty coffee vendors, free cookbooks, demonstrations and other opportunities to indulge your senses. Find out why chocolate was once considered the food of the gods. Tasting starts at 3:30 p.m., cooking school begins at 7 p.m. 8233 Will Clayton Parkway.
