Other Cinema Digital: A Mediarchaeological Survey

Works from the movie house that inspired the Aurora Picture Show

Jerry vs. Jerry by TV Sheriff is just one of the offerings of Other Cinema Digital: A Mediarchaeological Survey. TV Sheriff, a video DJ of sorts, is a media whiz that mixes beats with television episodes for pieces like Jerry vs. Jerry, in which a dance beat drives a battle between Jerry Lewis and guests on the Jerry Springer show. The soundtrack features the chant “Jerry! Jerry!” repeated with Lewis’s “Hey Lady” and Jerry Springer guests shouting “I’m five months pregnant!” all mixed together.

“We’re trying to get the most marginal sort of work,” says Noel Lawrence, who works with Other Cinema, the pioneering movie house in San Francisco that inspired Houston’s Aurora Picture Show. “A lot of [our films] are probably too out there to find on the so-called independent film avenues like the Sundance Channel or whatever.”

Today’s screening will feature a look at several Other Cinema projects. Also on the ticket are works from Negativland, a collective of filmmakers who also remix television and take advantage of the fair use laws, and The 70’s Dimension, which takes a look back on commercials from the decade that gave us polyester and smiley faces. Lawrence will hang around town for tomorrow’s program, Underworld Cinema: The Life and Work of J.X. Williams, which will include a screening of the cult film Peep Show and a lecture by Lawrence about his life and career. 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow. Aurora Picture Show, 800 Aurora. For information, call 713-868-2101 or visit www.aurorapictureshow.org. $6.
