Via Colori

The Center for Hearing and Speech takes over Sam Houston Park for an all-out street-painting festival

For the next two days, Houstonians will be able to see the dull, gray streets of downtown transformed into works of art right before their eyes. The annual Via Colori (street of colors) festival at the Sam Houston Park this year features over 175 volunteer artists working in the pastel medium, and will benefit the Center for Hearing and Speech. Festival-goers who want to participate can purchase a square of sidewalk to decorate for between $500 to $1,500; those who just want to hang out and enjoy witnessing the artistic process will be treated to gourmet food and free treats for the kids. The live entertainment is another incentive: Groups like Paris Green, the El Orbits and the Old School Swing Band will be rocking throughout the day on two different stages (hey, artists love to paint to music). 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow. Sam Houston Park, Bagby and Allen Parkway. For information, call 713 523-3633 or visit www.houstonviacolori.com. Free.
Sat., Nov. 17, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 18, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 2007
