Bill Bellamy

Comic turns on the charm

While many comedians get material from being neurotic or overweight, Bill Bellamy stands out as a good-natured and good-looking guy (his own Web site even brags of his “charm and good looks”). Actually, it was Bellamy’s pretty face that ushered him into comedy — he got his first taste of the biz when he entered a male beauty pageant in college. From there he went on to discuss dating escapades, including “booty calls” (a term he says he made up), on Def Comedy Jam before scoring VJ gigs for MTV’s Jamz and Beach House. Bellamy’s stand-up routines focus on gender differences (“Women can have orgasms, and it looks pretty.”), race differences (“Black people don’t understand ‘time-out’…my mama had a different thing, it was called ‘knock-out.’”) and other observational humor. Since leaving MTV, he has branched out by starring in sitcoms and movies, including the soon-to-be-released Getting Played, and hosting TV shows and specials such as 2005’s Last Comic Standing. Go see this funny man at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. today and tomorrow, and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The Improv, 7620 Katy Freeway. For tickets and information, call 713-333-8800 or visit www.improv2.com. $22.
