Two Star Symphony Musical Retrospective

This string quartet finally finds a venue fit for their sound

Two Star Symphony Musical Retrospective may not feature any new songs by the string quartet, but you will definitely hear something different: the sound. “We’ve been trying to find the right venue to perform where it would do the instruments justice,” says violinist Debra Brown. The instruments she’s referring to are the latest additions to Two Star, handmade pieces by the world-renowned luthier Anton Krutz. The quartet’s usual venues aren’t known for their ability to capture acoustic sound — Two Star plays every Thursday at the Avant Garden bar and has also played at Rudyard’s, Numbers and various art shows. For the retrospective, however, the group will be performing at the University of St. Thomas’s Jones Hall, a place more fitting for their classical, -macabre tunes.

“Being in a place that’s designed for a regular acoustic sound where we don’t have to have amplification is a real treat,” she says, adding, “People will have to be attentive and sit down and not be drunk and screaming.” But the clearer sound does make the group a bit nervous. “I think we get away with quite a bit in playing in noisy crowds.” Two Star should have no trouble today as they revisit their catalog, including works from previous collaborations with Bobbin-doctrin Puppet Theater, Dominic Walsh Dance Company, American Ballet Theater, FrenetiCore and excerpts from original silent film scores such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. 7:30 p.m. 3800 Montrose. For reservations and information, call 713-478-2334 or visit www.twostarsymphony.org. $13 to $20.
