Cynthia escaped a violent stepfather by entering into an equally horrific marriage. She escaped that by taking to the streets. Evelyn ran away from an emotionally abusive mother and eventually found herself “living in my truck, changing clothes in a park, walking the streets when my truck broke down.” Nena was adopted by the age of three, molested by her father, and says that, by age 15, she “felt dead, like nothing meant anything. I just wanted to get out. I didn’t care about who I hurt.” All of them took a lot of street drugs to escape the pain and did whatever they had to to get them.

Voices in the Woodwork, a series of monologues presented by In Alignment Productions, is based on interviews with these and three additional women who went through the circular worlds of abuse, drugs and homelessness and found a way out. As the title indicates, the show, written by local actresses/producers Cheryl Tanner and Jordyn Lorenz, tells of crimes that rarely occur in a single headline-ready blast but happen silently and daily through the course of years.
