Altar Boyz at Stages

Get ready to “Raise the Praise”

Are you ready for some Jesus jokes? Well, Altar Boyz has got them. There’s also lots of really great hair and cool dance moves. A fictional boy band on the “Raise the Praise” tour, the Altar Boyz hope to save some souls (while putting on a good show, of course). The five-man group includes Matthew, Luke, Mark, Juan and Abraham, a nice Jewish boy who’s ended up in the mix somehow. Between song and dance numbers, the Boyz reveal bits of their personal lives and the group’s history, like just how Abraham got wrangled into singing for Jesus.

Onstage with the Boyz is the Soul Sensor DX-12, a machine that supposedly shows the number of “burdened souls” in the room. The Altar Boyz try to get the number down to zero with their happy, uplifting performance. There are lots of double meanings and gentle stabs at both religious rock bands and organized religion, but it’s all done in good fun and most importantly, on key. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you about the Jesus jokes. 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through January 20, 2008. Stages Repertory Theatre, 3201 Allen Parkway. For tickets and information, call 713-527-0123 or visit www.stagestheatre.com. $10 to $36.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m.; Wednesdays, Thursdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Dec. 8. Continues through Jan. 13, 2007
