Nights on the Bayou: City Soundscapes, DeKam vs. Nalepa

The NOTB series features abstract video and electro-ambient music

We asked video artist John DeKam to explain his upcoming show, DeKam vs. Nalepa, the last of this year’s Bayou City Soundscapes series. “It’s improvised. It’s kinda abstract, architectural, geometric, textural.” Okay, abstract video, textural music, we got it.

“The thing that’s special about this show is the projection and the site that we’re doing the projection on. We’re all under the old Sabine Bridge, so DJ Nalepa will be [playing] music and then I’ll be doing the visuals. The visuals will be projected all over the surfaces of the bridge with a moving mirror projection system. What all that means is that I’m sort of -spinning video while the DJ spins records. The projectors can move the video around.” And what exactly will he be screening? “Mostly just stuff from QVC television,” he deadpans. (DeKam will actually be using bits from the many movies he’s made and some recent European shoots.) “It’s multimedia art, but it’s also just a chill-out party,” DeKam says. Well, why didn’t you say that in the first place? 7 p.m. Sabine Promenade (near Sabine and Memorial). For information, call 713-743-5548 or visit www.buffalo-bayou.org. Free.
