As philistines go, Hitler was unprecedented. Not only did he commit crimes against humanity, he plundered museums throughout Europe. The 2006 documentary The Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the 12-year-long, systematic theft and destruction of European art by the Nazis, and how historians and museum officials have miraculously rescued millions of works. Critics have said that one of the most riveting parts of the film is the description of how European museums and galleries prepared for the impending German invasion. In the case of the Louvre, some 300 trucks were employed to cart off and hide the collection — the Mona Lisa secretly escaped in a sealed ambulance.
