We Are the Hollow Men Art PartyLocal artists take on the scarecrowBy Dusti RhodesPublished on December 19, 2007 at 1:42amWhen we asked Eli Brumbaugh what to expect at the We Are the Hollow Men Art Party, he had to give co-curator Jacob Calle a call. We didnt expect this much hype, Brumbaugh said and apologized for being underprepared for our interview at a coffee shop. Brumbaugh and Calle came up with the idea to have artists create their own scarecrows, and from there it kind of snowballed, Brumbaugh says. Now everyone is kind of freaking out about it. This includes not only local artists, but bands such as the Fatal Flying Guiloteens and The Dimes, who offered to play the show. (See Playbill for more on that.) Visually, Brumbaugh says youll see plenty of scarecrows with personal touches. Jacobs going to do E.T. and Elliot, like suspended on the bike up in the air, he says, going on to describe other pieces (with the help of Calle, whos still on the phone). The artistic duo James & Kate will address class issues with Scare-Bo, which will feature a nicely dressed, rich scarecrow towering over a poor one. Other works include a living scarecrow and scarecrows inspired by anime, George W. and horror movies. Sounds pretty neat, but isnt the shows theme about two months too late? A lot of people [ask] that, but to tell you the truth, we kind of like the fact that its going to be in winter, Brumbaugh says. Scarecrows dont have to be Halloween, I mean, they sit in fields year-round. Touché. 8 p.m. Keene Street Warehouse, 1620 Keene Street. For information, e-mail elibrumbaugh@gmail.com. $5 to $7.
