Caroline or Change

The times they are a-changin’ for musicals at Main Street Theater

The Civil Rights Movement makes mighty fodder for musical theater in Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner’s Caroline, or Change, a groundbreaking show that’s been hailed by critics across the nation. The story follows Caroline, a maid in a Jewish household in 1960s Louisiana. Caroline finds herself at the center of great cultural upheaval as she tries to maintain her ordered life, make ends meet for her family and come to terms with the end of segregation. But the story isn’t all seriousness — theatrical magic happens when the washer and dryer and even the moon become part of the cast in this show, which is getting its Houston premiere at Main Street Theater. Today’s preview performance is at 7:30 p.m. Regular schedule is 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sundays. Main Street Theater, Chelsea Market, 4617 Montrose Boulevard. For information, call 713-524-6706 or visit www.mainstreettheater.com, $16 to $35.
Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Jan. 3. Continues through Jan. 20, 2008
