Cuban-born, Puerto Rico-dwelling writer Mayra Montero, author of nine novels and a short story collection, is also a journalist, which comes through in her fictional endeavors richly told tales that blend fact and fiction with an unblinking eye to the past. Her most recent work to be translated into English is Dancing to Almendra, released just last month.
