“12th Annual Citywide African-American Art Exhibit”

It’s a good thing this is a leap year — you’re going to need that extra day if you want to see the entire 12th Annual Citywide African-American Art Exhibit.Twenty-eight artists have work at nine locations around Houston, including the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Houston Urban League, the Museum of Culture Houston, the JPMorgan Chase Building and Rice University.

Among the work is Blue, a digital photograph by Jouxlyn Bonier on view at Rice. The photo shows a woman’s face shrouded in a vibrant blue cloth, with only her eyes visible. Hip Hop no. 1 by Cedric Franklin, also at Rice, is a mixed-media work that shows a young boy standing in front of a chalkboard. On the board behind him is written “I will not sell my soul for a record deal. I will not go to jail just to keep it real,” over and over. M’kina Tapscott, curatorial assistant for contemporary and modern art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, says Hip Hop no. 1 “speaks to what this exhibition is about, about the continuing thread of arts in the community and finding new artists and new talent.” The month-long schedule of related activities includes an opening reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on February 1 (Farnsworth Pavilion at Rice University, 6100 Main).
