African Children’s Choir

Houston’s the latest stop for the Journey of Hope tour

Angelina Jolie can’t save all the orphans in Africa, can she? Thankfully, the orphans of the African Children’s Choir are saving themselves. The choir, started 23 years ago, takes orphaned or abandoned African children with amazing musical talent on a worldwide tour to raise awareness of the plight of Africa’s youngest citizens, including kids from Sudan, Chad and Kenya. These are children who have lived through some of the worst that life has to offer, and they use Africa’s choral tradition, blending music and dance, to tell their stories. (Performances raise money for educational programs throughout the continent.) The choir has appeared at such varied venues as the United Nations and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and can be heard on the Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond soundtracks. You can see them perform today at 8 p.m. Wortham Center, 501 Texas. For information, call 713-227-4772 or visit www.spahouston.org. $17 to $47.
