British Television Advertising Awards

It’s the Super Bowl for hawkers on the small screen

Not all commercials are created equal. You can see what we mean at today’s British Television Advertising Awards. The show is like Super Bowl Sunday for British commercials. These spots transfix viewers instead of sending them packing to the kitchen for snacks or channel surfing for something better.

One winning entry, for instance, digitally arranged a band led by Elvis with members including Jimmy Page, Noel Gallagher, Keith Moon, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder all on one stage. The commercial cleverly advertises BBC Radio’s “amazing lineup.” In another, paint explodes like fireworks high above an apartment complex, showering everything in an awesome rainbow. The commercial, an ad for Sony Bravia high-def televisions, won best 90-second commercial. 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. $6 to $7.
Feb. 22-24, 7 p.m., 2008
