Brent Weinbach

Halfway between gross and mesmerizing, this comedian is all-the-way funny

“Sometimes people criticize me for acting too creepy onstage,” San Francisco comedian Brent Weinbach deadpans in his stand-up routines. Truth be told, it does take a while to get used to the physical and gross-out comedy laced into Weinbach’s spot-on impressions and intelligent social commentary. One minute Weinbach is pretending to be a Republican slam poet (“Health care, welfare, education / Please file these things under commie masturbation”), and the next he’s doing a dance that involves rubbing and poking at his crotch. But once you get past his weird, intense stare and non sequiturs, you’ll be hooked.

The former film student and substitute teacher has developed a strong following in San Francisco, and his experience subbing in inner-city schools has inspired funny bits, including, among others, the one about the diverse mix of kids who made fun of Weinbach’s tight pants. He also recently co-starred in a spoof about defecating on the Berlin Wall. The laughs will come once you’re done wincing. Really. 8:30 p.m. today; 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
