Lisa M. Robinson

The photographer signs copies of her new book, Snowbound

Winter may be departing, but it’s in full force today at the Houston Center for Photography, where Lisa M. Robinson is signing her recent monograph Snowbound. The book’s stark but beautiful images might be especially enchanting to Houstonians, who almost never see their outdoor spaces transformed by blankets of snow. Robinson spent five winters shooting snow-ladened landscapes, capturing eerie yet tranquil images of ice, fog and, of course, snow. Robinson does an especially good job of portraying the social hibernation that comes along with winter, through empty, useless baseball diamonds, covered-up swimming pools and even a sorry-looking trampoline serving only to preserve a single brown patch on the earth beneath it.

Still, there’s a winter wonderland aspect to the photos as well, and a few gorgeous icicle cascades and treescapes that remind viewers why folks live north of Texas in the first place. Today’s book signing is at 7 p.m. 1441 West Alabama. For information, call 713-529–4755 or visit www.hcp-online.org. Free. Work from the Snowbound series is on display through the end of May at Kinzelman Art Consulting. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays. 3909 Main.
