Jigu! The Thunder Drums of China

This company of 28 musicians beats the hell out of their instruments

What could be bigger and better than the Taiko Drummers of Japan pounding away on their huge instruments? (Wait, that doesn’t sound right…) How about Jigu! The Thunder Drums of China on some even larger percussive monstrosities for a little cross-cultural competition?

Hailing from Shanxi Province in China, this company of 28 musicians combines ancient sounds with modern musical elements for a cacophony of cadences. Jigu — which means “to beat or torch the drums” — pound on a wide variety of items with choreographed movements. In one segment, two men sit inside two huge, smoking red drums and beat the hell out of them, creating such a thunderous sound that would make Keith Moon wince. (Hey, even Keith didn’t sit inside his drums!) This is not stuff for the faint of heart, and the performance (which kicks off Miller Outdoor Theatre’s season) is sure to set off car alarms blocks away. 7:30 p.m. 100 Concert Drive.
