“Reverent Estimations”

Adam Schreiber looks beyond the obvious

Austin-based artist Adam Schreiber is fascinated with landscapes, but not the green kind. For his new exhibition “Reverent Estimations,” Schreiber photographed stark, un-inhabited landscapes such as “clean rooms” in research facilities, LBJ’s presidential archives and abandoned corporate architecture, focusing on their textures and patterns.

The show was shot entirely on the campus of the University of Texas while Schreiber was an MFA candidate. Because many of the shots appear out of context, there’s a real sense of, “Wait, what am I looking it?” to much of Schreiber’s work. In his Presidential Moon, for example, a large-scale, pockmarked model of the moon is juxtaposed with an equally distressed concrete wall. Viewers wonder, “Is it a photo of the moon? Is it something that looks like the moon? What is it?” (It’s actually a photo of a lunar model from the LBJ archives that Schreiber found in a storage room.)

The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through April 12. Lawndale Art Center, 4912 Main. For information, call 713–528–5858 or visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org.
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: March 7. Continues through April 12, 2008
