Chapel/Chapter

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company is set to make us uncomfortable

In the mood for a warm-fuzzy, feel-good kind of night? Skip the Chapel/Chapterdance performance. But if you want a provocative, engrossing experience that questions humanity and spills over with talent, Chapel/Chapter is just the thing.

The performance by the New York-based Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company explores the disconnect between the media-saturated public and the disturbing, horrific news we see each day. Together, Jones’s choreography, the music and the company’s use of text ask a question we all avoid: What makes humans capable of such callousness?

This dance company has often stirred up the political pot since it launched 25 years ago. Chapel/Chapter does this and more — the performance also tackles religion, morality and redemption in a way that’s almost graceful, if that’s possible with these topics.

The New York Times lauded a previous performance of Chapel/Chapter, calling the music “quite remarkable,” the dancers “all wonderful” and the entire production “lavish.” 8 p.m. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For tickets and information about related events, including a free panel discussion with Bill T. Jones, call 713-227-4772 or visit www.spahouston.org. $20 to 50.
Fri., March 28, 8 p.m., 2008
