Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation

A former kid genius who re-created the Spielberg classic comes to the Aurora Picture Show

With this summer’s Indiana Jones and the Arthritic Knee (we think that’s the title) looking to be a franchise-stretching, mid-life crisis-inspired, cash-grabbing dud of Terminator 3-like proportions, we suggest you check out the work of someone who was earnestly and admirably inspired to create by the Indiana Jones saga: 12-year-old Chris Strompolos. Well, Strompolos is in his late thirties now, but he and two cohorts, Eric Zala and Jayson Lamb, were just 12 when they set out to create a shot-for-shot remake of 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. They finished at age 19, and the final product, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation, is screening today at the Aurora Picture Show with Strompolos in attendance.

Called the greatest fan film in history by Wired magazine, The Adaptation amazes with both the kiddy cuteness of its stars and the precocious ingenuity with which they re-create a George Lucas production of a Steven Spielberg film with just their allowances and parents’ basements. 3 p.m. today and 6 p.m. Saturday. 800 Aurora Street. For tickets and information, call 713-868-2101 or visit www.aurorapictureshow.org. $6.
Sat., March 29, 6 p.m.; Sun., March 30, 3 p.m., 2008
