The Sandra Organ Dance Company explores the legacy of César Chávez

Civil rights and farming aren’t things you’d usually group together, but both were at the heart of the work of César Chávez, the Mexican-American leader who founded the United Farm Workers union. To celebrate Chavez’s life and work, The Sandra Organ Dance Company is mounting a production Si Se Puede (It Can Be Done).

In choreographing her emotional, energetic modern-dance homage, Sandra Organ Solis relied on the writings of the activist himself as well as on tales of the people he helped, including A Prayer for the Farm Worker. Another dance, “Tata Dios,” (“Father God”), is about a migrant-farm worker couple and the challenges they faced.

Though inspired by the past, this production is nonetheless in tune with the present, as the issues surrounding immigrants and the laboring underclass are at the forefront of the current political debate. 8 p.m. today.
