Viennese audiences were a glum group during Napoleon’s occupation in the early 1800s. To cheer things up a bit, Beethoven wrote his Symphony No. 7. It worked. Audiences loved the energetic, happy music, and it went on to become one of his most famous works ever. Today Kwame Ryan, in his Houston Symphony debut, tackles Symphony No. 7 and Pärt’s “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.” The program also includes Ravel’s “Piano Concerto for the Left Hand” with guest pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet (who really has two hands, just in case you were wondering). 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
