Houston Japan Festival

The local Asian community celebrates its heritage

The Japanese Garden at the Hermann Park will look a little different this weekend when it’s transformed into a Japanese village for the Houston Japan Festival 2008. Among the entertainers set to perform during the two-day celebration are Taiko drummers Kofu Daiko and Kaminari Taiko and the Sakura Japanese Dance Company. International artists coming in for the festival include Shin Koyamada, one of the stars of The Last Samurai. There’ll also be plenty of music groups and martial arts experts (you can expect to see a few flying crane pose-downs before it’s all over), a Menko tournament and a sushi-eating contest. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Hermann Park’s Japanese Gardens, 6201 Golf Course Drive. For information, call 713-963-0121 or visit www.jashouston.org. Free.
Sat., April 5, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun., April 6, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., 2008
