Of No Relation III

Barnevelder Movement/Arts Center celebrates its fifth anniversary with a freewheeling performance by Lower Left

The dance collective Lower Left doesn’t need rehearsals — hell, they don’t even need their dancers to live in the same city (members live in San Diego, Oakland, New York and Marfa). This isn’t a hindrance; it’s actually a creative strategy, and it will be on display in “Of No Relation III,” a program combining refined, chore-ographed works and new, improvised -performance.

Local Left will join several local dancers, including Leslie Scates, who’s collaborated with the collective for the past few years, to perform works including Coping Mechanisms, a structured improvisation about dealing with life’s many annoyances; Do You See What I See, which explores the performer-audience relationship; and Choking Duet, about a suffocating relationship, performed entirely on a bench with small but -meaning-packed movements. A reception will follow the show, which marks Barnevelder Movement/Arts Center’s fifth anniversary. 8 p.m. 2201 Preston. For information, call 713–529–1819 or visit www.barnevelder.org. $15.
Sat., April 5, 8 p.m., 2008
