Marjane Satrapi

Persepolis author gets her Academy Award-nominated brain picked

Persepolis author/illustrator Marjane Satrapi stops in Houston fresh from the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. The graphic memoirist earned nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Foreign Language Film, respectively, for the screen version of her illustrated autobiography. Satrapi grew up in war-torn Tehran during the Islamic Revolution and war with Iraq before eventually fleeing to Paris.

As if these struggles weren’t enough weight on her shoulders, Satrapi was also dealing with all the usual growing pains — love, angst and the search for identity. Her decision to share this story in a comic-book fashion earned Satrapi comparisons to other notable author/illustrators such as Maus mastermind Art -Spiegelman.

Satrapi will have her brain picked today during an interview with graphic novelist and University of Houston Creative Writing faculty member Mat Johnson. See what he can draw out of her at 7:30 p.m. The interview will be followed by a book sale and signing. Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby. For tickets and information, call 713-521-2026 or visit www.inprinthouston.org. $10.
Sat., April 12, 7:30 p.m., 2008
