Amadeus: Music and a Movie

Austin’s PKW Productions provides a live soundtrack to the fictionalized life of Mozart

What’s better than a great movie? How about a great movie with live music? Wait, wait, how about an Academy Award--winning great movie about blood, guts and revenge with live music? That’s hard to beat. Well, you can get all that at today’s Amadeus: Music and a Movie. Hollywood provides the movie, and Austin-based PKW Productions provides the live chamber music (substituting for the film’s muted musical soundtrack). In the movie, Tom Hulce plays the musical genius Mozart, and F. Murray Abraham plays the insanely jealous Salieri. A lesser composer, Salieri is enraged that the vulgar Mozart easily creates heavenly music, and he plans a way to usurp Mr. M. He comes up with the sneaky idea of commissioning “Requiem,” a piece that was so difficult to write it left Mozart a broken man. Aw, poor Mozart. 7 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse, 531 South Mason Road. For information, call 281-492-6900 or visit www.drafthouse.com/mason. $14 to $16.
