Sure, art deco is usually associated with Miami, New York and Los Angeles, but Houston has a wealth of examples of the 20th-century architectural style, too. Of course, given the city’s propensity for demolition, they are disappearing. In Houston Deco, authors Jim Parsons and David Bush include photos of deco designs on everything from downtown landmarks to East End industrial sites. The book highlights both still-standing treasures such as the Alabama Theater, which was preserved as a bookstore after it closed down, and bulldozed beauties like the River Oaks Shopping Center on West Gray.
