“The Hour: Cocktail Time Design 1930-1980” & 20th Century Modern Market

The Lawndale Arts Center looks to stylize your vices

Don Browne’s interest in modern design led him to some bad habits. “The smoking kind of came along with the drinking,” he says. Browne isn’t referring to his personal habits, though — he’s talking about his preference for collectibles. He’s spent more than 20 years acquiring objects associated with the two vices and is showcasing some of his favorites in “The Hour: Cocktail Time Design 1930-1980.” Pieces include martini shakers, glasses, stirrers and ashtrays all created by -modern-minded designers, as well as bar books from the time period, which contain drink recipes and so much more. “Some are very, very detailed descriptions of the proper etiquette for parties, in particular the cocktail party,” he says.

All these objects — and the talk of parties — will likely have you itching to get your hands on some wares of your own. Perfect timing, as the show is running concurrently at Lawndale Art Center with the 20th Century Modern Market. The annual Lawndale fund-raiser features local vendors selling clothing, furniture, knickknacks and more, all made between the 1920s and the 1970s, so you can indulge your guilty pleasures in style.

Viewing hours for the exhibit “The Hour” are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 26, through Tuesday, April 29. After a preview party from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 25, the Modern Market runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. 4912 Main. For information, call 713–528–5858 or visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org. The exhibit is free; tickets for the Modern Market are $5 to $40.
