9 Star Hotel

A documentary chronicles familiar dangers on a different border

9 Star Hotel hits close to home with a story about a far-off place. Israeli filmmaker Ido Haar chronicles the life of Palestinian men who cross the Israeli border every day in search of construction work. The illegal journey is filled with disappointment, joy and the constant fear of being caught by soldiers on the border. Through home video-quality camerawork, Haar captures the workers’ dedication to providing for their families. Hmm, sounds familiar…

9 Star Hotel is part of the Palestine Film Festival, which also includes tomorrow’s screening of Knowledge Is the Beginning, a documentary about a conductor’s dream of bringing the Israeli and Arab worlds together with an orchestra of musical prodigies. Both films start at 7 p.m. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For tickets and information, call 713-639-7515 or visit www.mfah.org/films. $7; $6 for students, seniors and members.
Sat., May 10, 7 p.m., 2008
