One Shot

One Shot is a ballet based on the legacy of Charles “Teenie” Harris, whose work is currently on display at the University of Houston. The legendary photographer — also known as One Shot — captured African-American life in Pittsburgh from 1936-75 with his photos of everyday life, sports teams, jazz musicians and moments in the civil rights movement. His body of work is believed to be among the largest photographic collections of black life in the U.S.

“Teenie’s images inspired me to discover the story inside and behind the photos,” says Ronald K. Brown, choreographer/artistic director for Evidence, A Dance Company. Drawing upon all this for a ballet seems like a tall order, but Brown managed to pin it down in seven parts, including “Free Spirits,” “The Meeting Room” and “The Crossroads,” which mix traditional African, ballet and contemporary dance with spoken word. 8 p.m. Cullen Theater, Wortham Center, 500 Texas.
