Holy Dirt

Talento Bilingüe de Houston plays host to a one-man show about life in small-town America

Holy Dirt, the one-man show starring Martin Martinez, follows the antics of a Latino actor living in a small town. “He’s loosely based on me,” Martinez says. “He’s doing some community-based [theater], and he’s also very politically minded. But every time he goes out, he gets caught up in this commercial machine. He thinks he’s doing an audition for Luis Valdez, but it turns out he’s performing for a tired, hack Hollywood director who’s going to be doing the Hispanic version of It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ve done the show a lot in the Southwest, but also in Holland, Germany and Denmark. It plays on some Latino cultural markers, yes, but it’s really about American culture.” 8 p.m. today and tomorrow. Talento Bilingüe de Houston, 333 South Jensen Drive. For tickets and information, call 713-222-1213 or visit www.tbhcenter.org. $7 to $12.
Fri., May 16, 8 p.m.; Sat., May 17, 8 p.m., 2008
