CraftTexas 2008

The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft hosts a juried show

CraftHouston got so big they had to change the name — now it’s CraftTexas 2008. The juried exhibition highlights the best in Texas-made contemporary craft, including traditional and cutting-edge work made of clay, wood, fiber, glass and found/recycled materials. Almost 400 pieces were submitted, but only 84 survived the cut. Artist Jane Sauer, who served on the panel of jurors, says CraftTexas 2008 is “the strongest body of work that I have ever seen in a regional show — truly amazing and outstanding.” Among the offerings are Omar Perez’s My Shoes Are Killing Me (an exaggerated high-heeled shoe), Peter Norris’s Nkisi Box (an oak jewelry box covered with rusted iron nails) and Lotus Witt’s Bandana Biggie Size Flask (an oversize liquor flask decorated with skulls).

There’s an opening reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 23, and a Gallery Walk & Talk at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, 4848 Main.
