The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

Cowboys, crime fighters and the Hong Kong Cavaliers make for the strangest of strange bedfellows in this sci-fi cult classic

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension has all the ingredients of a cult classic. The 1984 sci-fi/comedy film features Peter Weller (of RoboCop fame) as Buckaroo Banzai, a neurosurgeon who’s also a crime fighter and a rock band front man. Banzai and his team, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, are fighting Lord John Whorfin (John Lithgow), a doctor with an over-the-top European accent who’s been through an experiment gone bad. The two are vying for control of the “oscillation overthruster,” a contraption that can transport people across space using the eighth dimension, which is a place populated by all kinds of strange creatures. There’s also a girl, of course, who helps Banzai in his quest. Other highlights include Jeff Goldblum as a cowboy from New Jersey, Christopher Lloyd as John Bigboote (pronounced “big booty”) and lines like, “Laugh-a-while you can, Monkey Boy!” 8:30 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
