“2008 Houston Area Exhibition”

16 artists represent the past four years of the city’s art scene

The “2008 Houston Area Exhibition” is a survey of the city’s art scene — narrowed down to 16 people. The quadrennial show at Blaffer Gallery features a range of paintings, sculptures, videos, mixed media works and more from select artists around town. Domy Bookstore patrons might recognize Seth Alverson’s somewhat morbid paintings featuring coffins and funeral scenes. Mindy Kober brightens things up with her vivid, coloring book-type paintings inspired by the scenes on the back of U.S. quarters. Sasha Dela explores ecology and economics with shelves of found plastic bottles filled with black water. Also on display is Dela’s video Bits and Pieces, featuring University of Houston students saying phrases such as “I taste good,” “You taste good,” “I’m going to chop you up into bits and pieces and eat you” or “No thanks, I’m full.” 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through August 2. University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun. For information, call 713-743-9530 or visit www.blaffergallery.org. Free.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: May 10. Continues through Aug. 2, 2008
