Band of Annuals

The news from Salt Lake City isn’t all bad

Hopefully this visit by Salt Lake City’s Band of Annuals will be a balm to soothe the recent tension between Texas and Utah. From the Jazz once again vanquishing the Rockets in the playoffs to all that unfortunate polygamist-sect business, things haven’t been too cordial between us lately. The Annuals, a six-piece group that turns on the male-female vocal axis of Jay Henderson and Jeremi Hanson, plays moody, forlorn alt-country, with Brent Dreiling’s pedal steel laying on the heartache extra thick. They can be rousing, too, as on “Don’t Let Me Die” from last year’s Let Me Live (Kilby), and their live cover of Bob Dylan’s “Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat” is said to be a real corker. A visit from these pilgrims from Mormon country, who have shared the stage with Daniel Johnston, Pinback and Magnolia Electric Co, sounds like a mighty fine peace offering. Program opens at 10 p.m. Boondocks, 1417 Westheimer. For information, call 713-522-8500 or visit www.myspace.com/boondocksbar. $10.
