“Round 28: Otherwise Constricted”

Project Row Houses encourages its latest group of artists to un-keep house

The artists featured in “Round 28: Otherwise Constricted” display their innovation through renovation. Jeff Williams literally has built up and brought down his Project Row House, an ongoing installation; he adds new walls and wood floors to show what could be, but also tears down old walls and lifts up parts of the floor to reveal what was. Lovie Olivia has created a place of fantasy and meditation. Her room is painted black from floor to ceiling and adorned with paintings of women and birds. Golden laces are strung from each work and attached to nests of shells and eggs on the floor. Julie Spielman has filled her space with a quilt made of her mother’s linens; the large, white sheet takes up the entire space and is hung from the ceiling so it seems to float just above the floor. And Robert Hodge has painted the walls of another house with silhouettes of people from the streets of his community holding dreamcatchers; he depicts women using a payphone, men pushing shopping carts and children playing in the streets while holding the mystical, web-like circles. See how these artists didn’t keep house from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Through June 22. 2500 Holman. For information, call 713-526-7662 or visit www.projectrowhouses.org. Free.
Wednesdays-Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: March 22. Continues through June 22, 2008
