The Giver

Utopia is upended at this Stages Repertory Theatre production

More About

Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver has seduced millions of readers. It made Lowry a literary hero (and landed her on a number of banned-book lists). Her message will be proclaimed again today with Stages Repertory Theatre’s presentation of Eric Coble’s adaptation of her novel. Opening with an emotion-free utopia of “sameness,” a life with no crime, no poverty and no unhappiness, The Giver ends with her takedown of that bland, risk-free society. At the center of the story is 12-year-old Jonas, recently assigned to his life’s work: to be the keeper of all the memories of the time that came before the sameness, a time like our own, full of sadness and despair but also overflowing with true love, joy and innovation. Jonas learns that utopia came at a high price, one that he no longer wants to pay. He and his elderly predecessor, known as the Giver, helm a production that’s perfect for fans wanting to introduce their young successors to Lowry’s vision. 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Miller Outdoor Theatre, 100 Concert Drive, Hermann Park.
