Vibrant: Houston Artists in City HallsThirty-two painters and photographers take over the walls of 901 BagbyBy DONOVAN ERIK PARKERPublished on June 11, 2008 at 1:40amYou might have a little trouble finding Vibrant: Houston Artists in City Halls. The 32 paintings, drawings and photographs that make up the exhibit are spread over several locations in Houstons City Hall. Some of them, including Sandi Seltzer Bryants piece Untitled, are in the mayors conference room. The painting is made up of four squares that are filled with line after line of vibrant color, each seeming to struggle for space. Margaret Colvins Blush is also in this room. Much more subtle than Bryants Untitled, the abstract painting has thick, pale rose- and -cantaloupe-colored lines. Youll find more art in the underground tunnel that connects City Hall with the City Hall Annex, including Chuy Benitezs photographic narrative Tecolote, New Mexico and Mary Beth Woiccaks painting Lightening, an abstract filled with lines that resemble writing over washes of color. Theresa DiMennos Lycoris Floral, a highlight of the exhibit, is hung in a hallway on the fourth floor. A digital print on canvas, Lycoris Floral is the extreme magnification of five yellow-tipped stamen reaching out from the center of a lush pink flower. See the show from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Through February 20. 901 Bagby. For information, call 713-527-9330 or visit www.haatx.com. Free.
