Metamorphosis: Echoes of the Voyage
Bayou City Performing Arts has a few friends join it on stage
One of the oldest gay men’s choruses in the United States, Bayou City Performing Arts, hits the stage again today, and this time it’s not alone. A chamber orchestra, guest soloists, a professional dance troupe and members of the Bayou City Women’s Chorus are also on hand for the song-and-dance program Metamorphosis: The Journey to Joy.

During the first half of the show, the chorus will perform contemporary choral pieces by Stephen Sondheim and Cole Porter, as well as two newly commissioned works by Alan Shorter: Love’s Song (about the hundreds of couples that lined up to get married at San Francisco’s City Hall in 2004) and The Gathering Storm (about the ups and downs of life and the ability to persevere). Both of Shorter’s pieces are making their world premieres today. During the second half, BCPA performs Robert Seeley’s Metamorphosis, which follows a young man as he struggles with his sexual identity.
