Galveston ArtWalk

The island city throws an arty street festival

The Galveston ArtWalk’s promotional team describes their event as “more than just a street festival,” and we agree. Galleries and shops all over Galveston’s historic downtown district will open their doors for the early-evening event, which features classes, lectures, music and, of course, art in a multitude of mediums.

Galveston Arts Center, which organizes the event, is holding an opening reception today for a new exhibit of photographs of the Gulf Coast taken in the 1980s by chemical engineer John C. Dyes; the center will also be showing works by painter Kelli Scott Kelley which whimsically comment on man’s treatment of animals. Other exhibits include Gaedge Erikssen’s satirical political commentary at Allure Gallery, as well as handmade jewelry and music by Genese Tilts at Leslie Gallery. Altogether, there are some 40 sites where you can listen to music, grab a bite to eat or shop for art. Make sure to stop by Galveston Arts Center first to pick up a map listing where all the action is. 6 to 9 p.m. 2127 Strand in Galveston.
